Why Are We Here, Lord?

Episode 8 - Published 27 May 2025

Discussion of the question "Why Are We Here, Lord?" and readings of two relevant poems.

Featuring readings of Our Purpose from Meet My Friend, and The Christian Task from Be Refreshed.

This episode is called Why Are We Here, Lord? Each of us was chosen by God to do His will. He gave us all a gift to use for His glory. And as God blesses us, He wants us to be a blessing to others by showing friendship and help and love and building them up as we minister to all the Word of God.

I would like to acknowledge Rick Warren, who wrote The Purpose Driven Life, where he describes worship and fellowship, discipleship and ministry, and also sermons from Pastor Keith Ware. It was from this book and these messages that I wrote the following poem called Our Purpose.

Our Purpose was taken from Romans, chapter 8, verse 28, where it says: And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Why am I here Lord, why was I born?
For what purpose I cannot see,
So why did you choose me, what can I do,
Tell me what do you want me to be?

Without a purpose what is this life,
Tell me, why am I here on earth,
Of what importance can I be to you,
And what point can there be in my birth?

Just ask the Lord and he’ll tell you why,
The answers are found in His book,
Open the Bible where all is revealed,
You just have to read it and look.

For God’s own purpose we were all made,
To love Him and bring Him pleasure,
Therefore trust Him and give of your heart,
And worship Him without measure.

God made you to be part of his family,
To have fellowship one with the other,
To mature in relationship with Him,
And treat all as sister or brother.

In God’s image we were for Him made,
God’s Spirit can transform your heart,
Our goal is to become more like Christ,
But everyone must do their own part.

Discipleship is to be like Christ,
In life we try His will to do,
The process is long and the going slow,
But our Lord is there always for you.

We must learn to avoid temptation,
God will mould us to go His way,
If we strive to keep our eyes to the right,
And we listen to all He does say.

God allows trouble to build us up,
Our character He aims to build,
So hold onto God for he’s in control,
As His purpose for life is revealed.

We were created to serve our God,
And to serve each other with love,
Ministering with all the joy of giving,
Doing the will of our Lord God above.

We have been blessed to be a blessing,
So no ministry is too small,
If it’s done in the service of our Lord,
And is of a benefit to all.

Help to build up others in their faith,
Be available to their need,
Do not put it off until tomorrow,
For that may be far too late indeed.

Our great God he likes variety,
That’s why each one was made unique,
To serve with special gifts He gave each one,
If you don’t know yours then ask and seek.

Another purpose God has set for us,
Is to go and evangelise
To all people from every walk of life,
Be they humble, wealthy, poor or wise.

So share your faith with the world’s people,
Who on your journey you may meet,
Whether they are at home or overseas,
Lay down one more soul at Jesus feet.

Listed are five purposes of God
That in His world he asks of you,
So encourage your church and Christian friends,
For Jesus, His work on earth to do.

At times we may know as we complete a task, that God always meant for us to work at the task that is set before us. Other times we may look back on our lives and realise that it was God’s purpose to lead us to that particular profession, or to be on the spot when a member of God’s family is crying out for help. The help may be of a physical, emotional or social nature. I know that for myself, my work was always with children; it was something I wanted to do from being a child myself, and I eventually got to be able to become trained in childcare.

But the most important thing I think I did in childcare was working in the slums of London, where those children surely needed me, because they were migrants from overseas, leading a very poor and hard life as they arrived, and living with many families in one room, and the conditions were so poor, that if they didn’t come to a care centre during the day, then they would be put into care and away from their parents. So we had them there from breakfast time, right through to the evening meal, before they were picked up and taken home for the night.

I didn’t realise it at the time, but looking back now, I really do truly believe that one of the main reasons that God wanted me to be here, at this time, was to be working with those children in the slums of London. So we never know, as I just said, whether we’re doing the purpose of his will right now, which I hope we are, but also looking back and seeing, that was what God wanted me to be doing at that time of my life.

I’m going to read the poem now called The Christian Task, and that is taken from Acts chapter 20 verse 24, where it says: However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me…

Each one of us was chosen by God,
To do for His glory a task,
If you’re not sure what God wants from you,
Get down on your knees and ask.

Just open your heart to Lord Jesus,
And listen to what he does say,
For the Holy Spirit within you,
Will guide you in the right way.

Sometimes you may not have realised;
So think back on your life on earth,
And look at work you did long ago
For God planned it at your birth.

For some it will be a lifetime task,
For others one allotted thing,
But for all of the Lord God’s children
He asks other souls to bring.

To the waiting arms of Christ Jesus,
And to tell them right from the start,
Of the wonderful love abundant,
And peace He’ll bring to their heart.
