Mother's Day

Episode 7 - Published 26 May 2025

A heartfelt reflection on Mother's Day, explored through biblical insights and touching poetry that honours mothers, their love, and their spiritual role in our lives.

Featuring readings of Mother’s Day from He Is There, A Mother from Be Refreshed, and My Mother from Quiet Moments With Jesus.

Recently, in Australia, we’ve celebrated Mothering Sunday. How precious are mothers? They love us just unconditionally, don’t they? And when their children become rebellious or sulky, mothers may not like the behaviour and will let the children know, but they still love them very much. Mothers are important to us, not only when we’re children but also when we’re adults.

My mother went to be with the Lord many years ago. When I make a mess with sewing or knitting or face an upset, I wish Mum was here to help with the problem I’m having. Mother’s Day has always been important in the family, a day when we let her know how much we appreciate what she does for us.

I’ll now read a poem for you called Mother’s Day, and it’s taken from Proverbs number 1, 8 to 9, and it says: …and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck. Mother’s Day.

Children are God’s precious gems
Sent from Heaven to live on earth,
They need someone very special
To care for them from their birth.

So God gave His children mothers,
To hold them with a loving arm,
To cherish, clothe and feed them
And to keep them safe from harm.

God entrusted His dear children
To a mother’s tender care,
When she needs help and guidance
He always listens to her prayer.

A mother’s there to listen,
When there’s a problem to talk through,
She’s someone to depend on
For she’s always there for you.

A mother’s heart is full of joy,
As she watches her children grow,
She’s there to share their happy times,
Or to comfort them when they are low.

Jesus blessed the little children,
As they stood round their mother’s knee,
He put His hands upon them,
And said, “Let them come to me.”

The Lord blesses mothers also,
And understands a mother’s love,
For this love is a special gift from God,
Sent to them from Heaven above.

The childhood years are fleeting,
But a mother has always known,
Her children remain her children,
Be they babes or fully grown.

Today is Mothering Sunday,
A day to show you really care,
So tell her how much you love her,
And thank her for being there.

The Bible also mentions the attributes of mothers on several occasions. A comprehensive writing on the subject was given by King Lemuel relating how his mother offered advice, and in Proverbs 31 he says that his wife worked hard to provide for her family. This next poem is just called A Mother.

A mother forgets childbirth pains,
When she feels her newborn’s touch,
As gently in her arms she holds
Her baby she loves so much.

A mother’s hands they are outstretched,
As she’s there for that first walk,
And listens very carefully,
When her child begins to talk.

She’s ready to be firm but fair,
When tantrums her toddler takes;
She’s there to help when her child falls,
With a kiss she better makes.

A mother takes her child to school,
And is there to reassure,
When all is strange, new and unknown,
And the child feels so unsure.

A mother is there with answers,
To help when her child’s in strife,
She’s there to teach of everything,
That will help her child through life.

Mothers aren’t there for one season,
or just when the child is small,
a mother’s love is forever,
till she hears God’s trumpet call.

These words remind me of God’s love,
for he’s with us from our birth,
and always watches over us,
as we live upon this earth.

His hands, they’re ever ready,
to uplift us when we fall,
and he’s always there to listen,
when in prayer to him we call.

The Lord is there with discipline,
when we wander from the track,
and when we ask for forgiveness,
he always welcomes us back.

Just before we end this episode, I hope you indulge me when I tell you about my mum. I was so fortunate to have such a happy childhood, so this last poem is about my mother.

I’m always so very grateful,
That God chose you for my birth,
When He knew the time was right,
To send me to live on earth.

There could not be a better mum,
Than you mother and your care,
Your kindness and your discipline,
And for always being there.

The way you taught me right from wrong,
Though at the time I do fear,
I didn’t always listen,
Oft’ pretended not to hear.

But your good advice did sink in,
And so as I grew and thought,
I knew your words of wisdom,
Should make me be as you taught.

Whenever I got into scrapes,
You were always there each day,
For comfort and for guidance,
Knowing the right thing to say.

You taught me about our Lord God,
Showed me how to love and pray,
Said grace at the meal table,
Teaching me just what to say.

Then all too soon childhood was gone,
Soon a family of my own,
To love and guide as children,
With the seeds my mum had sown.

Through the years of my adulthood,
Mum was happy to be there,
Her grandkids loved her dearly,
As with them stories she’d share.

I no longer have a mother,
As it came our time to part,
When God called her to Himself,
But ever she’ll live in my heart.
