Friendship

Episode 12 - Published 27 Oct 2025

Discussion of the power and value of friendship, both with people in our lives and with God.

Featuring readings of Friendship from Quiet Moments With Jesus and A Friend on Her Birthday and the titular Meet My Friend from Meet My Friend.

Throughout life, we meet many people. These people may come from different walks of life. Some are migrants from countries around the world who share their cultures. People we encounter have often experienced various upbringings, schools and workplaces. They will be of differing personalities and characters, which make talking to these types of people all interesting and educational as we learn from them in a casual setting.

I taught a class of recent migrants from different countries who spoke very little English. The object of the class was to teach these mums an overview of Australian customs, to hopefully help them settle in a little easier to their new country. Mostly I was able to teach by visual observations.

The new migrants enjoyed the classes and in a short time new friendships were established. One thing all people have in common is they are all loved by God as individuals who were created by him, whether believers or not. People we meet are acquaintances we might meet fleetingly, or have known for some time, or they may be friends we have known our entire lives.

John 15 verses 12-14a Jesus said: My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends…

How amazing that Jesus Christ calls us his friends. Hence, because of this fact, I have called my second book of spiritual poetry, Meet My Friend. Friendship is such a valuable thing that this is the title of this podcast that I am doing now. Occasionally we meet someone who is a special friend, someone who we can easily relate to. Usually this person has similar values and a sense of humour as us, is a confidant and a mentor and understands us.

This friend willingly listens to our joys and our woes, and agrees to disagree in some areas, but loves us always and is ready to be there for us. This relationship works equally for each other. Friendship is indeed a gift from God. Friendship is such an important part of our lives that the subject has inspired me to write several poems on the value of friendship. I’d like to read a couple of them to you now.

The first one is called Friendship and I’ve taken it from the book of Proverbs, chapter 17, verse 17, and it says: A friend loves at all times…

God sends us many special gifts,
A precious one He does send,
Is a gift we sure do treasure,
The value of a trusted friend.

A true friend is there to listen,
To discuss with, joys and woes,
To get life in perspective,
Whether we talk of highs or lows.

A friend will offer us advice,
And will take us as we are,
If we are cross or moody,
That will not let the friendship mar.

A friend is the sort of person,
With whom we can share a thought,
Who will let us think aloud,
As our ideas we try to sort.

With friends a confidence is shared,
And with confidence we know,
That no matter what we say,
Not ever will it further go.

A friend shines brightly like the sun,
Like a sunbeam through a shower,
A rainbow brightly glowing,
Or a beautiful budding flower.

Of dear friends you may have several,
That are there when you’re in need,
To know you’re loved and thought of,
Is a great privilege indeed.

My thoughts and prayers regarding friends,
Are that I can always be,
A special friend to them all,
As my good friends have been to me.

This next poem I want to read to you is called A Friend on a Birthday.

Friends sit together on a pew,
One is me and the other you,
The age group doesn’t matter here,
Both love the Lord and hold Him dear.

Children are the friends delight,
All who are dear in Jesus sight,
He said, ‘Let them all come to me,’
Then sat with them some on His knee,

The friends swap stories in a book,
Tell of their lives and life’s outlook.
Of confidences they do share,
All hopes and fears verses and prayer.

Both come from countries far away,
Now Aussie is their home they say,
They enjoy the lifestyle they have, where
There’s joy, and freedom, everywhere.

I thank you Lord, as friends we met,
To share tales now the patterns set.
Enjoy your trip to your homeland,
But do come back to our surf and sand.

To a special friend on her birthday,
I have just one more thing to say,
Enjoy your day dear Sonia and then
God speed, God’s peace, God bless Amen.

Yes, friendship is a wonderful gift from God. I find it awesome that we can call Jesus a friend. Jesus is always with us and is available to listen to us whenever we have problems or want to share happy moments with him. Jesus knows us better than we know ourselves. Jesus wants to be your friend too, if he isn’t already. Just go to him in prayer and you will find him waiting for you.

This last poem that we’re going to have today is called Meet My Friend and it’s from John, chapter 15, verse 13. It says there: Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends and that’s exactly what our saviour did for us on the cross.

Have you met my best friend
Who for me is always there,
To whom I can tell everything,
And really know that He will care?

He’s always there beside me,
As I travel down life’s road,
He will help me when I stumble,
And will share my heavy load.

He listens to my problems,
When I’m troubled or am sad,
I tell Him how I’m feeling,
And then find things are not so bad.

Then when I’m feeling happy,
I do thank Him from my heart,
For I know whatever happens
From me He will never part.

He knows my inner secrets,
Each care, each hope, each thought,
I do long to be more like Him
And to act just like He taught.

I know what He expects of me,
For I read it in His book,
It is called the Holy Bible,
So why don’t you have a look?

He wants to be your friend too,
His name’s Jesus, God’s own Son,
You only have to ask Him,
And into your life He’ll come.
