Featuring readings of The Easter Story and What’s Good About Good Friday? from Quiet Moments With Jesus.

Episode 6 is entitled Easter. You may choose to listen to this podcast at Easter, however, the Easter story can be told any time of the year, as Easter is very significant to all Christians at all times. Easter offers hope and a bright future for this life and for eternity. Jesus’ love for humanity is emphasised by sending his Son to live among us as a sinless human and demonstrating his care for us all. Ultimately it was at Easter that Jesus died an agonising and torturous death to free believers from their sins when he was crucified on a cross.

That day is known as Good Friday and on the third day after Jesus died, he rose from the dead inside the tomb and the huge stone that covered the entrance had been moved away. Jesus walked out of the tomb and he met many people, including his disciples, many of whom had been present at the crucifixion.

Before Jesus ascended into heaven, he left the Holy Spirit to dwell within believers as a guide. Following is the Easter story in poem form. It’s taken from Luke chapter 24 verse 7 and I’ve called it the Easter story.

As Easter comes round once again,
Christian emotions overflow,
With sorrow, joy and thankfulness,
As God’s great love for us does show.

For God saw all of His children,
Needed to learn from His dear son,
To teach, heal love and guide them,
Until His work on earth was done.

God sent to the world Lord Jesus,
To save His people gone astray.
Jesus Christ knew that He would die
For our sins on a cross one day.

The day came for Christ to die for us
Upon Himself our sins to take,
Was arrested in Jerusalem
And condemned for our very sake.

Jesus was beaten and tortured,
A crown of thorns pulled on His head,
In pain was mocked; carried the cross,
To be crucified was led.

To Calvary they took Jesus,
Nailed His hands and feet to the wood,
The cross was raised and Christ looked down,
At His mother’s grief where she stood.

He hung there between two criminals,
Bleeding, bruised, and in awful pain
The Son of God so cruelly killed,
His death on that cross was our gain.

The crucifixion of our Lord,
Was recorded many years before,
The Bible book of Isaiah,
Told of agony our Lord bore.

But death, we Know couldn’t hold Him,
For seen alive on the third day,
Our gracious Lord rose from the dead,
As to the disciples he did say.

On the hearts of all believers,
The Holy Spirit He did leave,
To guide thoughts, and prayers and actions,
To those who truly do believe.

Now our Lord is back in Heaven,
Sitting at His Father’s right hand,
He waits for all His dear children,
To join Him in that wondrous land.

As I read this next poem, I want you to know that I’m addressing non-believers and answering their questions. This poem is called, What’s Good About Good Friday? I’ve taken this from Luke again, chapter 24, verse 46, where it says: He told them, This is what is written, the Messiah will suffer and then rise from the dead on the third day…

What’s good about Good Friday?

Tell why is it called ‘Good Friday’
Non Christian friends do say to me,
As at this time they call Easter,
They hung your Jesus on a tree.

They beat Him and were very cruel,
Put a crown of thorns on His head,
Scourged Him and whipped Him many times
Until His whole body it bled.

‘Good Friday,’ you must be crazy,
You could hear non believers talk,
For they led Jesus to His death,
On such a long and torturous walk.

“How can you still say, ‘Good Friday’“
As Jesus walked along a track,
Staggering up Calvary’s hill,
Carrying a cross upon His back.

Yet still you do say, ‘Good Friday,’
As the Lord on the cross did lay,
Nails hammered in His hands and feet,
So upright His body would stay.

Three long hours before he died,
The whole land became like night,
As darkness settled everywhere,
The soldiers guarding Him took fright.

For as Jesus took His last breath,
The temple curtain tore in two,
Rocks split and then an earthquake,
Some knew, the Son of God was true.

‘Good Friday,’ can’t be the right words,
A sword was thrust into His side,
Soon after Jesus said the words,
‘It is finished,’ then He died.

Shall we really say, ‘Good Friday,’
When there in agony He hung,
And hours passed in suffering,
But Christ’s story has just begun.

To say ‘Good Friday’ seems all wrong,
The non believing people said,
For Jesus who you worship,
Has been confirmed to be dead.

So gather round non believers,
And I will tell you what is true,
What Jesus did on ‘Good Friday,’
He could also do for you too.

Then He was taken by his friends,
Laid in a tomb cut from a rock,
A soldier guarded the entrance,
And a rolled stone acted like a lock.

Then in wonder on the 3rd day,
Jesus Christ rose up from the dead,
An angel told people who came to see
He was resurrected like he said.

By the time I’ve told the story,
I think you’ll understand why,
‘Good Friday,’ are amazing words,
Telling of God’s plans for you and I.

For years the world was waiting,
For a Messiah to come to earth,
Then God sent His son as human,
Choosing Christmas time for His birth.

He was given the name of Jesus,
Growing up as a Nazarene,
Had the grace of God upon Him
Was strong and wise and yet serene.

He was sent to earth for mankind,
Who from God many had gone astray,
To teach them love and compassion,
And how to live their life God’s way.

Jesus came to save God’s people,
The Lord would love to hear you call
And fill you with grace and goodness,
And believe how Jesus died for all.

Jesus came for our salvation,
For God wants us to be with Him.
If we live as true believers,
Asking for repentance of sin.

Jesus came to take away sins’
Making a sacrifice in love
If we believe the Bibles words
He will welcome us above.

So keep hold of the commandments
Love your neighbour, show you care,
Be peaceful, joyful and friendly,
With others the love of God share.

So to every non believer,
Hope my explanation did show,
Why Easter is so important
Although there’s so much more to know,

So as you celebrate this Easter
Have eggs, buns, and enjoy your way
Have lots of fun with family,
Then maybe think of ‘Good Friday.’
